Ping i-Blade Steel Irons
Ping Golf iBlade Iron
While Ping Golf hasn’t always carried an association of being the go-to source for blade irons, and their business has fundamentally centred around building cavity backs, Karsten Solheim, company founder, made this significant discovery in the 1960s. When he created his first game-changing cavity by channelling out the back of a blade iron, he recognised the potential for a promising future design. Since that time, Ping has been an ambassador for the advantages of perimeter weighting.
It stands to reason that Ping’s new iBlade implements this technology under the bonnet of its small blade chassis, with a strategically chosen degree of cavity back.
It has been estimated by Ping that roughly 95-percent of their Tour Players will utilise these new irons after acquisition. This indicates that the iBlades were clearly designed for the game’s best golfers, offering the simple, clean look at address that pros demand.
Offering more forgiveness and distance than any of their predecessors, which include the popular S55 irons, Ping iBlades feature a more refined feel and look that truly hone-in on the “blade” concept – more so than anything previously produced by the manufacturer.
While the iBlades won’t instantly transform a 15-handicap golfer into a single handicap, expect them to make a substantial impact on performance. These are arguably the most forgiving blade irons available – millimetre for millimetre.
Cast from 431 stainless steel, these irons feature two distinct benefits: softer feel on impact, and a higher strength-to-weight ratio (vs the 17-4 stainless steel incorporated into the S55), ultimately saving approximately four grams of weight as a direct result of this new design.
Thinner club faces, cavities that have been hollowed-out more, and the Custom Tuning Port (CTP) on each iron being extended closer to the sole are the result of Ping being able to successfully repeat weight savings in various key areas.
Optional shafts (no additional charge): Ping AWT 2.0, Project X, XP 95, NS Pro Modus 105
Stock grip: Golf Pride New Decade Multi-Compound
Stock shaft: True Temper Dynamic Gold (s)
Thin high-speed face: iBlade’s face has been reduced to one half the thickness its predecessor, the S55. According to Ping, this has the potential to deliver up to six more yards from the long irons.
Clean and simple shape: With the designs of these innovative irons being driven by the best players in the game, expect to see a thinner top rail, straight leading edge, minimal offset, and a sharp high-toe design.
Activated Elastomer: Dampens vibration and increases feel to create a solid sound at impact.
Tungsten toe weighting: iBlades have 23g, on average, of tungsten weighting, positioned deep and low in the toe, increasing MOI significantly. When shots aren’t impacted on the face’s centre, this weighting delivers extra ball speed protection, improving distance consistently.
New direction with premium options for shafts and grips
Ping has long promoted the use of their own shaft designs in the development of their irons, wedges, and drivers. It would stand to reason that their engineers have performed rigorous testing of these models to ascertain which shafts are best suited for each. With the knowledge, experience, and data garnered from years of fitting to millions of golfers, they have a clear perspective regarding which shafts affect certain players within a particular range. They’ve most likely identified key trends in this data, as the iBlade come standard with the Dynamic Gold steel iron shaft, a proven tour winner for many years.
Other top shafts available: Project X, Ping AWT, XP95, and NS Pro Modus 105 – at no additional charge
