Callaway Golf ClubsIn 1982 the first Callaway golf clubs were wedges and putters with hickory shafts. Between the years of 1988 and 1994, the S2H2 irons featuring short straight hollow clubs with a depressed back, minimal offset, rounded heel base, and bore through shaft. S2H2 woods, with a multi-faceted base, were developed during the same time period. A significant innovation in Callaway golf clubs came along with the Bobby Jones irons and woods from 1990 to 1995. Bobby Jones putters had a metal sheen and came in 10 different models. Big Bertha was a big name in golf clubs in the early 1990’s, with woods, irons, and putters. The name Big Bertha was derived from the World War I cannon because of its oversized driver and fairways head. A titanium driver with a 290cc volume and a 45 ˝” graphite shaft was the largest of the Big Bertha series. The original Big Bertha irons, designed between 1994 and 1995, featured a 360 degree undercut channel, a thin face, and a generous offset. These were identifiable by a black medallion with silver and red letters and a number on the bottom. Men and women’s putters with the same features were introduced about the same time as the irons. Three years later, Big Bertha evolved into a stainless steel driver and fairway woods with a War Bird soleplate based on the original Heavenly Wood design. Shortly thereafter, the titanium and tungsten driver and irons came along and in 1998; four major changes to Big Bertha irons were introduced. These improvements included a repositioning of the center of gravity, a recontouring of the base, small changes to the heel and towline, and the new graphite shaft. A distinctive set of lighter gold irons was made from an aluminum bronze. Roger Cleveland designed a series of wedges for the Callaway Golf Company that eliminated the undercut channel and came in 48”, 52”, 56”, and 60” styles. In 1998, a junior set of clubs was developed that included a driver; a 6 and 8 iron, wedge, putter, and a golf bag. The set was available in Medium for ages 7 to 9 and Tall for ages 10 to 12. In addition, Callaway Golf Company developed a special series of Carlsbad putters named for nearby roads such as the Palomar, Rutherford, Aston, and Faraday. New Big Bertha irons and woods came on the market in the late 1990’s and in the year 2000, tungsten insets extended from the heel to the toe of the club, allowing for precise positioning of the center of gravity for each club. |
