About Nike GolfNike golf began sometime after 1957 with Bill Bowerman meeting Phil Knight, the owner of Blue Ribbon Sports. Nike shoes were first made as Tiger running shoes, when 1,300 pairs were sold for $8,000 in 1964. Bowerman, the designer for the company, developed the Marathon shoe in 1967, and along with Jeff Johnson, the first company employee, introduced the Boston and the Cortez running shoes. Subsequently, Phil Knight resigned his position as a professor at Portland University to become CEO of Nike. The initial logo or “Swoosh” symbol, representing the wing of the Greek goddess NIKE, was designed in 1971 for Nike golf by Carolyn Davidson. Phil Knight paid Carolyn, a student at Portland University, $35.00 for her freelance graphic design. In Greek mythology, NIKE was synonymous with battlefield victories and, as such, brings the nation’s top athletes to unprecedented victory, embodying the spirit of Swoosh in courage and conquest. Blue Ribbon Sports soon became Nike and the first Nike soccer/football shoe and t-shirt came on the market in the 1970’s. By 1986, Nike had ventured into the sport of golf, and today, Nike produces every type of golf equipment and apparel. Nike golf clubs include drivers, putters, wedges, and irons. The Sasquatch 460 is a superb driver, with outstanding power and forgiveness, voted the best in 2006 by Golf Digest. The Sasquatch fairway woods feature a higher launch, further distance, and extra weight where needed. Nike golf balls such as the One Platinum, Ignite, and Mojo have been used in many major tournaments. Some of the best golf shoes are made by Nike, as well as accessories such as spikes, shoe totes and bags, socks, and other golf apparel. Nike introduced a complete line of golf equipment and apparel for women to golf and specialty shops in 2003 and these new products include the Slingshot irons, the T-40 fairway woods, and a 295cc driver designed especially for women. In addition, Nike added the Verdana golf bag, cart bag, and shoe tote. In November 2004, Tiger Woods chose Nike golf’s latest driver, the 460cc Nike Ignite, and went on to win two out of three of his next events. At the time, a need for a better golf ball arose and Nike’s golf team developed the One Platinum. This ball provides added distance and control when used with the larger driver, but keeps its spin performance around the green. Nike golf also sponsors three learning centers for golf enthusiasts at Potomac Ridge, Queenstown Harbor, and South River in Maryland. These learning centers offer membership for beginners, intermediate, and advanced players. Since its beginning, Nike golf has been known for the outstanding, innovative products it has developed for the continued success of so many professional athletes.
